  abstract = {Offensive language detection has been well studied in many languages, but it is lagging behind in low-resource languages, such as Hebrew. In this paper, we present a new offensive language corpus in Hebrew. A total of 15,881 tweets were retrieved from Twitter. Each was labeled with one or more of five classes (abusive, hate, violence, pornographic, or none offensive) by Arabic-Hebrew bilingual speakers. The annotation process was challenging as each annotator is expected to be familiar with the Israeli culture, politics, and practices to understand the context of each tweet. We fine-tuned two Hebrew BERT models, HeBERT and AlephBERT, using our proposed dataset and another published dataset. We observed that our data boosts HeBERT performance by 2% when combined with DOLaH. Fine-tuning AlephBERT on our data and testing on DOLaH yields 69% accuracy, while fine-tuning on DOLaH and testing on our data yields 57% accuracy, which may be an indication to the generalizability our data offers.   abstract = {Synonymy relationships are used in many NLP tasks and knowledge organization systems. However, automatic synonym extraction is a challenging task, especially for low-resourced and highly ambiguous languages such as Arabic. This paper addresses the task of extending a given synset with additional synonyms taking into account synonymy strength as a fuzzy value. In other words, given a mono/multilingual synset and a threshold (a fuzzy value $[0-1]$), our goal is to extract new synonyms above this threshold from existing lexicons. We present twofold contributions: an algorithm and a benchmark dataset. The dataset consists of 3K candidate synonyms for 500 synsets. Each candidate synonym is annotated with a fuzzy value by four linguists. The dataset is important for (i) understanding how much linguists (dis/)agree on synonymy, in addition to (ii) using the dataset as a baseline to evaluate our algorithm. Our proposed algorithm extracts synonyms from existing lexicons and computes a fuzzy value for each candidate. Our evaluations (using the one-way ANOVA test) show that the algorithm behaves like a linguist and its fuzzy values are close to those proposed by linguists (using RMSE and MAE).},

The most decent semantically-labeled dataset for Arabic is called \textit{ArabGlossBERT}, which is a relatively small dataset that consists of 167K context-gloss pairs (about 60K positive and 107K negative pairs), collected from Arabic dictionaries. This paper presents an enrichment to the ArabGlossBERT dataset, by augmenting it using (Arabic-English-Arabic) machine back-translation. After data augmentation, the dataset size increases to 352K pairs (149K positive and 203K negative pairs). In order to measure the impact of this augmentation, we present 13 experiments by trying different combinations of the augmented dataset in fine-tuning a BERT model for sense verification of the target word. The accuracy ranges between 81\% to 84\%. Although our data augmentation achieved state-of-the-art accuracy compared with baseline, our fine-tuned models cover more vocabulary and more contexts since we used larger training dataset. Furthermore, we provide an in-depth analysis of the accuracy for each part-of-speech (POS).},

We collected the content of the corpora from several social media platforms. The Yemeni corpus (~ 1.05M tokens) was collected automatically from Twitter. The corpora of the other three dialects (~50K tokens each) was manually collected from Facebook and YouTube posts and comments. Thirty-five (35) annotators who are native speakers of the target dialects carried out the annotations. The annotators segmented all words in the four corpora into prefixes, stems and suffixes and labeled each with different morphological features such as part of speech, lemma, and a gloss in English. We developed the Arabic Dialect Annotation Toolkit (ADAT) to assist the annotators and to ensure compatibility with SAMA and Curras tagsets.   abstract = {The processing of the Arabic language is a complex field of research. This is due to many factors, including the complex and rich morphology of Arabic, its high degree of ambiguity, and the presence of several regional varieties that need to be processed while taking into account their unique characteristics. When its dialects are taken into account, this language pushes the limits of NLP to find solutions to problems posed by its inherent nature. It is a diglossic language; the standard language is used in formal settings and in education and is quite different from the vernacular languages spoken in the different regions and influenced by older languages that were historically spoken in those regions. This should encourage NLP specialists to create dialect-specific corpora such as the Palestinian morphologically annotated Curras corpus of Birzeit University. In this work, we present the Lebanese Corpus Baladi that consists of around 9.6K morphologically annotated tokens. Since Lebanese and Palestinian dialects are part of the same Levantine dialectal continuum, and thus highly mutually intelligible, our proposed corpus was constructed to be used to (1) enrich Curras and transform it into a more general Levantine corpus and (2) improve Curras by solving detected errors.},

  abstract = {We present a formal Arabic wordnet built on the basis of a carefully designed ontology hereby referred to as the Arabic Ontology. The ontology provides a formal representation of the concepts that the Arabic terms convey, and its content was built with ontological analysis in mind, and benchmarked to scientific advances and rigorous knowledge sources as much as this is possible, rather than to only speakers’ beliefs as lexicons typically are. A comprehensive evaluation was conducted thereby demonstrating that the current version of the top-levels of the ontology can top the majority of the Arabic meanings. The ontology consists currently of about 1,300 well-investigated concepts in addition to 11,000 concepts that are partially validated. The ontology is accessible and searchable through a lexicographic search engine (http://ontology.birzeit.edu) that also includes about 150 Arabic-multilingual lexicons, and which are being mapped and enriched using the ontology. The ontology is fully mapped with Princeton WordNet, Wikidata, and other resources.},

  abstract = {Using pre-trained transformer models such as BERT has proven to be effective in many NLP tasks. This paper presents our work to fine-tune BERT models for Arabic Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD). We treated the WSD task as a sentence-pair binary classification task. First, we constructed a dataset of labeled Arabic context-gloss pairs (~167k pairs) we extracted from the Arabic Ontology and the large lexicographic database available at Birzeit University. Each pair was labeled as True or False and target words in each context were identified and annotated. Second, we used this dataset for fine-tuning three pre-trained Arabic BERT models. Third, we experimented the use of different supervised signals used to emphasize target words in context. Our experiments achieved promising results (accuracy of 84%) although we used a large set of senses in the experiment.},

  abstract = {Although the field of usability evaluation is a well-established discipline, there are no studies on how the usability of lexicographic e-services can be evaluated. This includes, for example efficiency, effectiveness and user satisfaction when looking up for synonyms, meanings, or translations using online lexicons. In this paper, we propose to combine two types of usability evaluations to assess the usability of such services: a subjective user-experience evaluation and a more objective controlled experiment—demonstrating how both methods complement each other. We applied our proposed approach to evaluate two important online lexicographic e-services: a lexicographic search engine developed at Birzeit University (https://ontology.birzeit.edu) as well as Google Translate. The user-experience evaluation was conducted through a survey that involved 622 users, and was designed to measure effectiveness, efficiency, satisfaction and learnability. The controlled experiment involved a set of defined tasks, which were carried out by four teams (12 people) in two laboratories, and their performance was monitored.   abstract = {Words in Arabic consist of letters and short vowel symbols called diacritics inscribed atop regular letters. Changing diacritics may change the syntax and semantics of a word; turning it into another. This results in difficulties when comparing words based solely on string matching. Typically, Arabic NLP applications resort to morphological analysis to battle ambiguity originating from this and other challenges. In this paper, we introduce three alternative algorithms to compare two words with possibly different diacritics. We propose the Subsume knowledge-based algorithm, the Imply rule-based algorithm, and the Alike machine- learning based algorithm. We evaluated the soundness, completeness and accuracy of the algorithms against a large dataset of 86,886 word pairs. Our evaluation shows that the accuracy of Subsume (100%), Imply (99.32%), and Alike (99.53%). Although accurate, Subsume was able to judge only 75% of the data. Both Subsume and Imply are sound, while Alike is not. We demonstrate the utility of the algorithms using a real-life use case in lemma disambiguation and in linking hundreds of Arabic dictionaries.},

  abstract = {Unlike what is the case for physical entities and other types of continuants, few process ontologies exist. This is not only because processes received less attention in the research community, but also because classifying them is challenging. Moreover, upper level categories or classification criteria to help in modelling and integrating lower level process ontologies have thus far not been developed or widely adopted. This paper proposes a basis for further classifying processes in the Basic Formal Ontology. The work is inspired by the aspectual characteristics of verbs such as homeomericity, cumulativity, telicity, atomicity, instantaneity and durativity. But whereas these characteristics have been proposed by linguists and philosophers of language from a linguistic perspective with a focus on how matters are described, our focus is on what is the case in reality thus providing an ontological perspective. This was achieved by first investigating the applicability of these characteristics to the top-level processes in the Gene Ontology, and then, where possible, deriving from the linguistic perspective relationships that are faithful to the ontological principles adhered to by the Basic Formal Ontology.},

  abstract = {The focus of this study is to evaluate the impact of linguistic preprocessing and similarity functions for clustering Arabic Twitter tweets. The experiments apply an optimized version of the standard K-Means algorithm to assign tweets into positive and negative categories. The results show that root-based stemming has a significant advantage over light stemming in all settings. The Averaged Kullback-Leibler Divergence similarity function clearly outperforms the Cosine, Pearson Correlation, Jaccard Coefficient and Euclidean functions. The combination of the Averaged Kullback-Leibler Divergence and root-based stemming achieved the highest purity of 0.764 while the second-best purity was 0.719. These results are of importance as it is contrary to normalized documents where, in many information retrieval applications, light stemming performs better than root-based stemming and the Cosine function is commonly used.},

  abstract = {In this article we present Curras, the first morphologically annotated corpus of the Palestinian Arabic dialect. Palestinian Arabic is one of the many primarily spoken dialects of the Arabic language. Arabic dialects are generally under-resourced compared to Modern Standard Arabic, the primarily written and official form of Arabic. We start in the article with a background description that situates Palestinian Arabic linguistically and historically and compares it to Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian Arabic in terms of phonological, morphological, orthographic, and lexical variations. We then describe the methodology we developed to collect Palestinian Arabic text to guarantee a variety of representative domains and genres. We also discuss the annotation process we used, which extended previous efforts for annotation guideline development, and utilized existing automatic annotation solutions for Standard Arabic and Egyptian Arabic. The annotation guidelines and annotation meta-data are described in detail. The Curras Palestinian Arabic corpus consists of more than 56 K tokens, which are annotated with rich morphological and lexical features. The inter-annotator agreement results indicate a high degree of consistency.},

  abstract = {Accessing or integrating data lexicalized in different languages is a challenge. Multilingual lexical resources play a fundamental role in reducing the language barriers to map concepts lexicalized in different languages. In this paper we present a large-scale study on the effectiveness of automatic translations to support two key cross-lingual ontology mapping tasks: the retrieval of candidate matches and the selection of the correct matches for inclusion in the final alignment. We conduct our experiments using four different large gold standards, each one consisting of a pair of mapped wordnets, to cover four different families of languages. We categorize concepts based on their lexicalization (type of words, synonym richness, position in a subconcept graph) and analyze their distributions in the gold standards. Leveraging this categorization, we measure several aspects of translation effectiveness, such as word-translation correctness, word sense coverage, synset and synonym coverage. Finally, we thoroughly discuss several findings of our study, which we believe are helpful for the design of more sophisticated cross-lingual mapping algorithms.},

  abstract = {Querying large data graphs has brought the attention of the research community. Many solutions were proposed, such as Oracle Semantic Technologies, Virtuoso, RDF3X, and C-Store, among others. Although such approaches have shown good performance in queries with medium complexity, they perform poorly when the complexity of the queries increases. In this paper, the authors propose the Graph Signature Index, a novel and scalable approach to index and query large data graphs. The idea is that they summarize a graph and instead of executing the query on the original graph, they execute it on the summaries. The authors experiments with Yago (16M triples) have shown that e.g., a query with 4 levels costs 62 sec using Oracle but it only costs about 0.6 sec with their index. Their index can be implemented on top of any Graph database, but they chose to implement it as an extension to Oracle on top of the SEM_MATCH table function. The paper also introduces disk-based versions of the Trace Equivalence and Bisimilarity algorithms to summarize data graphs, and discusses their complexity and usability for RDF graphs.},

  abstract = {We present a query formulation language (called MashQL) in order to easily query and fuse structured data on the web. The main novelty of MashQL is that it allows people with limited IT-skills to explore and query one (or multiple) data sources without prior knowledge about the schema, structure, vocabulary, or any technical details of these sources. More importantly, to be robust and cover most cases in practice, we do not assume that a data source should have -an offline or inline- schema. This poses several language-design and performance complexities that we fundamentally tackle. To illustrate the query formulation power of MashQL, and without loss of generality, we chose the Data Web scenario. We also chose querying RDF, as it is the most primitive data model; hence, MashQL can be similarly used for querying relational databases and XML. We present two implementations of MashQL, an online mashup editor, and a Firefox add-on. The former illustrates how MashQL can be used to query and mash up the Data Web as simple as filtering and piping web feeds; and the Firefox addon illustrates using the browser as a web composer rather than only a navigator. To end, we evaluate MashQL on querying two datasets, DBLP and DBPedia, and show that our indexing techniques allow instant user-interaction.},

  abstract = {This paper presents a linguistic ontology for Arabic, which is a formal representation of the concepts that the Arabic terms convey. The Arabic ontology can be seen and used as an Arabic WordNet as it follows the same structure; however, unlike WordNet, its content is ontologically well-founded. This is achieved as (i) concepts and their semantic relationships are well-formalized and based on ontological analysis and benchmarked to scientific advances rather than what native speakers accept; (ii) glosses follow strict formulation rules; and (iii) the top levels of the Arabic Ontology are philosophically inspired. These top-level concepts represent the most abstract concepts in Arabic and are used to govern the ontological correctness of the lower levels. The Arabic ontology consists currently of about 1,000 well investigated concepts in addition to 11,000 concepts that are partially validated.},

One can distinguish between three aspects of Interoperability; technical, semantic, and organizational. The technical aspect has been widely tackled especially after the ubiquity of internet technologies. The semantic and organizational aspects deal with sharing the same understanding (semantics) of exchanged information among all applications and services, in addition to modeling and re-engineering governmental processes to facilitate process cooperation that provision seamless e-government services. In this paper, we present the case of the Palestinian Interoperability Framework `Zinnar', which is a use case of using ontology in e-government (i.e., data and process governance) to tackle the issues of semantic and organizational interoperability. The followed methodology resulted in a success story within a very short time and has produced a framework that is intuitive, elegant, and easy to understand and implement.},

Most of these datasets are published in RDF which is a graph-based data model. However, querying RDF graphs is a major problem which has brought the attention of the research community. Among the many approaches proposed to tune up the performance of queries over data graphs, a number of them proposed to summarize RDF graphs for query optimization; instead of querying a dataset, queries are executed over the summary of the dataset. In order to summarize a dataset, two well known algorithms are being used, namely, Trace Equivalence and Bisimilarity. Nevertheless, these are memory based and thus suffer from scalability problems because of the limitations imposed by the memory. In this paper, we propose disk-based versions of those memory-based algorithms and we adapt them to RDF data. Our proposed algorithms are experimented on relatively large datasets and using different sizes of memory to prove that they are indeed disk based.},

The meaning in an ontology is typically specified through the sub and the super type of a certain concept/class. As we will discuss and explain in this article, this way of specifying the meaning of a certain thing (using sub/super types) is indeed difficult and complex. This because one has to investigate whether these sub/super types are true in reality, not only for applications at hand.   Abstract. This chapter describes various graphical notations for rule modeling. Rule modeling methodologies, empowered with graphical notations, play an important role in helping business experts and rule engineers to represent business rules formally for further deployment into a rule execution system. Rules, represented graphically, can be easier understood by business people and by technicians without intensive technical learning. In this chapter we mainly focus on three graphical notations for rules: UML/OCL, URML and ORM. UML/OCL is a mainstream modeling technology in software development, which is also accommodated by some business experts when modeling a system at the semi-formal, platform independent level. URML extends UML with additional graphical symbols and the concept of a rule, which allows visualization of different rule types on top of UML class diagrams. ORM is an alternative methodology with a rich graphical notation for modeling a domain at the conceptual level. The methodological power, graphical expressivity, and verbalization capabilities of ORM have made it the most popular language within the business rules community. This chapter introduces each of these graphical notations, explain how it can be used, and compare them against each other.

  Abstract. Reasoning with ontologies is a challenging task specially for non-logic experts. When checking whether an ontology contains rules that contradict each other, current description logic reasoners can only provide a list of the unsatisfiable concepts. Figuring out why these concepts are unsatisfiable, which rules cause conflicts, and how to resolve these conflicts, is all left to the ontology modeler himself. The problem becomes even more challenging in case of large or medium size ontologies, because an unsatisfiable concept may cause many of its neighboring concepts to be unsatisfiable. The goal of this article is to empower ontology engineering with a user-friendly reasoning mechanism. We propose a pattern-based reasoning approach, which offers 9 patterns of constraint contradictions that lead to unsatisfiability in Object-role (ORM) models. The novelty of this approach is not merely that constraint contradictions are detected, but mainly that it provides the causes and suggestions to resolve contradictions. The approach is implemented in the DogmaModeler ontology engineering tool, and tested in building the CCFORM ontology. We discuss that, although this pattern-based reasoning covers most of contradictions in practice, compared with description logic based reasoning, it is not complete. We argue and illustrate both approaches, pattern-based and description logic-based, their implementation in the DogmaModeler, and conclude that both complement each other from a methodological perspective.

  Abstract.We map ORM into the SHOIN/OWL, which is the most common description ogic in ontology engineering. As SHOIN/OWL is known to be a good compromise between expressiveness and computational complexity, this implies that the ORM constraints mapped in this paper are the constraints that are easier to implement and reason about. Our mappings are implemented as an extension to the DogmaModeler tool, which uses Racer as a background reasoning engine. Furthermore, the expressive, methodological, and graphical capabilities of ORM make it a good candidate for use as a graphical notation for ontology languages. In this way, industrial experts who are not IT savvy will still be able to build and view ontologies without needing to know the logic or reasoning foundations underpinning them.

  Abstract. The goal of this article is to formalize Object Role Modeling (ORM) using the DLR description logic. This would enable automated reasoning on the formal properties of ORM diagrams, such as detecting constraint contradictions and implications. In addition, the expressive, methodological, and graphical capabilities of ORM make it a good candidate for use as a graphical notation for most description logic languages. In this way, industrial experts who are not IT savvy will still be able to build and view axiomatized theories (such as ontologies, business rules, etc.) without needing to know the logic or reasoning foundations underpinning them. Our formalization in this paper is structured as 29 formalization rules, that map all ORM primitives and constraints into DLR, and 2 exceptions of complex cases. To this end, we illustrate the implementation of our formalization as an extension to DogmaModeler, which automatically maps ORM into DIG and uses Racer as a background reasoning engine to reason about ORM diagrams.

  Abstract. We introduce a novel view on how to deal with the problems of semantic interoperability in distributed systems. This view is based on the concept of emergent semantics, which sees both the representation of semantics and the discovery of the proper interpretation of symbols as the result of a self-organizing process performed by distributed agents exchanging symbols and having utilities dependent on the proper interpretation of the symbols. This is a complex systems perspective on the problem of dealing with semantics. We highlight some of the distinctive features of our vision and point out preliminary examples of its application.

  Abstract. ORM (Object-Role Modeling) is a rich and well-known conceptual modeling method. As ORM has a formal semantics, reasoning tasks such as satisfiability checking of an ORM schema naturally arise. Satisfiability checking allows a developer to automatically detect contradicting constraints. However, no complete satisfiability checker is known for ORM. In this paper, we revisit existing patterns from literature that indicate unsatisfiability of ORM schemes i.e., schemes that cannot be populated, and we propose refinements as well as additions for them. Although this does not yield a complete procedure - there may be ORM schemes passing the pattern checks while containing unsatisfiable roles - it yields an efficient and easy to implement detection mechanism (specially in interactive modeling tools) for the most common conceptual modeling mistakes.

  Abstract. We present a novel approach to support multilingual verbalization of logical theories, axiomatizations, and other specifications such as business rules. This engineering solution is demonstrated with the Object Role Modeling language, although its underlying principles can be reused with other conceptual models and formal languages, such as Description Logics, to improve its understandability and usability by the domain expert. Our engineering solution for multilingual verbalization is characterized by its flexibility, extensibility and maintainability of the verbalization templates, which allow for easy augmentation with other languages than the 9 currently supported.

  Abstract.This paper tackles two main disparities between conceptual data schemes and ontologies, which should be taken into account when (re)using conceptual data modeling techniques for building ontologies. Firstly, conceptual schemes are intended to be used during design phases and not at the run-time of applications, while ontologies are typically used and accessed at run-time. To handle this first difference, we define a conceptual markup language (ORM-ML) that allows to represent ORM conceptual diagrams in an open, textual syntax, so that ORM schemes can be shared, exchanged, and processed at the run-time of autonomous applications. Secondly, unlike ontologies that are supposed to hold application-independent domain knowledge, conceptual schemes were developed only for the use of an enterprise application(s), i.e. "in-house" usage. Hence, we present an ontology engineering-framework that enables reusing conceptual modeling approaches in modeling and representing ontologies. In this approach we prevent application-specific knowledge to enter or to be mixed with domain knowledge. To end, we present DogmaModeler: an ontology-engineering tool that implements the ideas presented in the paper.

  Abstract.This paper presents an ontology-based approach for managing and maintaining multilingual online customer complaints. To achieve trust and transparency in e-commerce communications and transactions, effective and cross-border complaint platforms need to be established and may be integrated in e-business activities. The effectiveness and width of such complaint service platforms depend on rising to several challenges, such as the sensitivity of business regulations and complaint resolution, the language and cultural diversity of the cross-border business parties, the extensibility according to the market needs and standards. In this paper, we show how such challenges can be addressed and simplified: first, we propose the construction of an ontology that captures the core knowledge of the customer complaint domain. Second, we show how the extensibility of a complaint platform can be simplified and managed. Finally, we show how a multilingual representation of this ontology may be constructed.
  This paper outlines our main achievements in Topic Panel 6 ("Ontology, Extensibility and Integration"), which is a special interest group in the EU CCFORM Thematic Network project.

  Abstract.This paper presents a specifically database-inspired approach (called DOGMA) for engineering formal ontologies, implemented as shared resources used to express agreed formal semantics for a real world domain. Our methodology aims to addresses several related issues, such as (a) the scalability of building and sharing ontologies; (b) the maximization of knowledge reusability; (c) the design and engineering process, that also simplifies building and managing ontologies; (d) the coexistence of several rule systems and ontology languages around a same ontology; and (e) the reconcile of the need to represent semantics independently from language with the need to create and use processes entirely rooted and described in (natural) language. We first define formal ontologies in a logic sense, i.e. as ''representationless'' mathematical objects that form the range of a classical interpretation mapping from a first order language (sometimes called a conceptual schema, and assumed to lexically represent an application), to a set of possible (''plausible'') conceptualizations of the real world domain. We then give a database-inspired ''view'' on implementations of ontologies seen as resources. Following common model-theoretic database practice we decompose such resources into ontology bases and into of their explicit so-called ontological commitments. Such architecture allows to make the latter (crucial) notion explicit as a separate layer, with concrete and dedicated services, mediating between the ontology base and the application instances that commit to the ontology. We claim it also leads to methodological approaches that naturally extend database modeling theory and practice, and so may in turn lead to scalable solutions for ontology-based systems. We discuss examples of the DOGMA implementation of the ontology base server and commitment server.

  Abstract.Unlike data models, the main fundamental asset of ontologies is the independency from a particular application's needs, i.e. relatively generic domain knowledge that can be used and reused among different kinds of applications. The first main topic of this paper is to discuss some independency aspects that help to understand the differences and similarities between ontologies and data models. The second main topic of this paper is to present an ontology engineering framework that increases the independency between an ontology and applications that use it. Our ontology engineering approach separates ''atomic'' conceptual relations and ''predicative'' domain rules. An ontology, defined in this way, consists of an ontology base that holds intuitive context-specific conceptual relations and a layer of ''relatively generic'' ontological commitments that hold the ontology rules. The latter may be seen as reusable knowledge components.

  Abstract.The Internet creates a strong demand for standardized exchange not only of data itself but especially of data semantics, as this same internet increasingly becomes the carrier of e-business activity (e.g. using web services). One way to achieve this is in the form of communicating ''rich'' conceptual schemas. Conceptual modeling techniques such as EER, ORM and to some extent the UML have been developed in the past for building information systems. These techniques or suitable extensions can often also be used to design business applications at a conceptual level. In this paper we adopt the well-known CM technique of ORM, which has a rich complement of business rule specification, and develop ORM-ML, an XML-based markup language for ORM. Clearly domain modeling of this kind will be closely related to work on so-called ontologies and we will briefly discuss the analogies and differences, introducing methodological patterns for designing distributed business models. Since ORM schemas are typically saved as graphical files, we designed a textual representation as a marked-up document in ORM-ML so we can save these ORM schemas in a more machine exchangeable way that suits networked environments. Moreover, we can now write style sheets to convert such schemas into another syntax, e.g. pseudo natural language, a given rule engine's language, first order logic, a given rule engine's language. We give (in appendix) a complete formal definition (''grammar'') of ORM-ML as an XML Schema, a comprehensive description of all of ORM's business rules in ORM-ML syntax and present an algorithm to map ORM schemas into ORM-ML. We illustrate the concept on a number of examples.

  Abstract.The purpose thesis of this paper is to present and discuss the scalability and reusability capabilities of DOGMA, an ontology modeling approach. Ontologies are repositories of domain knowledge and essential for knowledge management in organizations and for achieving interoperation among information systems. In the DOGMA ontology server architecture, we implement ontologies as classical database resources separating the ''fact base'' from the constraints, rules, derivations etc. that commit an application to such a given ontology ''base''. This separation allows an increased degree of scalability and reusability for the activities of ontology building. These are key issues in the context of the so-called Semantic Web where very large numbers of partial ontologies will emerge.

  Abstract.This paper describes a semantic portal through which knowledge can be gathered, stored, secured and accessed by members of a certain community. In particular, this portal takes into account companies and research institutes participating in the E.U. funded thematic network called OntoWeb. Ontology-based annotation of information is a prerequisite in order to offer the possibility of knowledge retrieval and extraction. The usage of well-defined semantics allows for the knowledge exchange between different OntoWeb community members. Thus, members are able to publish annotated information on the web, which is then crawled by a syndicator and stored in the portal's knowledge base. The backbone of the portal architecture consists of a knowledge base in which the ontology and the instances are stored and maintained. In addition, ontology-boosted query mechanisms and presentation facilities are provided.

  Abstract.In this paper wepresent the advantages of using an ontologyservice for the modelling of user profiles inthe EC FP5 IST project NAMIC (IST-1999-12392).By means of an ontology server people set upuser profiles, which are in fact views, i.e.specifications of queries on the ontology.These views are constructed using a JAVA API,which forms the commitment layer of theontology, built on top of an ontology base. InNAMIC an ontology server is used to establisha link between the lexical objectrepresentations, generated by the naturallanguage processors (NLP) on the one hand andthe user's interest, specified through theselection of relevant concepts and facts ofthe ontology on the other. This allows tospecify a user profile independently oflanguage, categorization and NLP specificworld models. Users then set up a profileconsisting of events, agents participating inthese events and other content information inwhich they are interested in. For instance, ajournalist writing articles about financialissues may be interested in related documentscontaining a ''raise event'' of companyshares. If he has specified those conditionsin his profile he will be able to retrieveresources which contain events that aresemantically related to that kind of eventpattern. User profiles in NAMIC do not have tobe static. The results of processing by theNLPs of a document the user is currentlyworking on, may be used to construct a dynamicprofile, which may contain events specific forthat document. This way a user's profile canbe dynamically adapted to his currentinterests. We also developed a tool whichillustrates the creation of user profilesusing ontological concepts and facts.
